Forest Lodges

For guests arriving without a van or a tent, three self-catering lodges tucked gently into the woodland. Cook properly, sit out on the decking with your morning tea, and let the trees do the rest. Dogs are welcome in all three. They come into their own in January, when four walls and the heating on has a great deal to be said for it.

A sheltered wooded valley five miles from Ilfracombe

Tucked away from the coastal winds, Hidden Valley Holiday Park is a small, family-run park rather than a busy one. 35 acres of sheltered woodland at West Down, five miles inland from Ilfracombe, where the whole point is to slow down a little.
Days here have a way of going gently. A hot drink to the sound of birdsong. The River Cain running down through the woods into a quiet lake, with a heron on it most mornings if you’re up early enough. Children damming the stream and losing a whole afternoon to it. Buzzards over the treeline. Woodland walks that start at your pitch, so the dog gets walked without anyone getting in the car.
And because the valley is naturally sheltered, it stays like this in October as readily as in August: a wooded retreat ten minutes from the sea.

    Lakeside Restaurant & Bar

The welcoming heart of the park. Home-cooked food, good coffee, and a drink looking out over the water. Dogs are welcome inside. Open [opening hours by season], with takeaway if you’d rather eat at the pitch.

  • Dogs

    Dogs

Off the lead through 35 acres of our own woodland, the River Cain to swim in, walks that start at the pitch, and a spot by your feet in the restaurant. They tend to sleep well here. Dogs are [dog charge per stay] per stay. Just tell us how many you’re bringing when you book.

Beaches, walks, rides and getting here

Beaches

Tunnels Beaches and Ilfracombe are five miles away, with Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton all within 6 miles. Sea air and coastal walks in the morning, back to the shelter of the trees by evening. Dog restrictions vary by beach and by season, so we list them one by one.

Walking & cycling

The Devon Coast to Coast starts in Ilfracombe, five miles away, and opens with an old railway line that runs mostly traffic-free towards Woolacombe. Further south it becomes the Tarka Trail: thirty miles of level, car-free riding.

Things to do

Chapel Wood Nature Reserve is a mile away on foot. Beyond that, the South West Coast Path, Watermouth Castle, the edge of Exmoor and a good handful of village pubs, none of them far.

Getting here

Prefer to leave the car where it is? A bus stop sits right at our entrance, with two routes running twice an hour to Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Braunton and the coast, and the rail connection to Exeter from Barnstaple.

What our guests say

  • “We have just returned from a wonderful 5 day break here. Monday to Friday. We stayed in the Swift Lodge. My brother stayed in his motorhome on pitch 29. The staff are so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We especially enjoyed the lake area. Beautiful scenery, plants wildlife. We saw kingfishers, spotted flycatchers and many other birds. A place of tranquility. The woodland walk is quiet and the stream runs slowly through the park. The toilet block etc is clean and tidy. The cafe/ restaurant serves superb food. Will definitely return. Thankyou Hidden Valley 👍”

  • “I really like this site and have been a couple of times. The pitches are good size and in a lovely setting. It is generally well serviced. I love that you pay for electricity by the meter which is so much fairer and better value than most sites. I also appreciate showers that you can adjust the temperature and dont have to keep pressing a button every 10 seconds. There is a wetsuit wash station as well so everything I need. The river and woods are great for the kids and for me too. Staff always friendly and helpful in person or on the phone or email.”

  • “Gem of a site, clean facilities and generous pitches. Fully serviced pitches are great. Lots of seasonal pitches too. Idyllic area, set, as the name suggests, in a valley with a babbling stream running through it. It's a bit hilly in places and the on site bar and restaurant is set on the hill. Overall, not a bad site at all. I have mobility issues and I am managing.”

Common questions about staying at Hidden Valley

Is Hidden Valley open all year?
Yes, we’re open 365 days a year. Touring and camping pitches and all three forest lodges can be booked in any month, Christmas and New Year included. Winter is one of the nicest times to be here: the woodland takes the edge off the weather, and you’ll have a good deal of the park to yourself.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, and most of our guests do. Dogs are welcome on every pitch, in all three forest lodges, and inside the Lakeside Restaurant. There are 35 acres of woodland to walk them in, much of it off the lead, and the River Cain to swim in. Dogs are [PLACEHOLDER: dog charge per stay] per stay. Just let us know how many you’re bringing when you book.
What’s the longest caravan or motorhome you can take?
Our largest pitches take units up to [PLACEHOLDER: maximum unit length in metres]. Every pitch type lists its own maximum, and the availability search only shows you the pitches that fit what you’re bringing. If you’re at the top of that range, pop reception a quick message before you book and we’ll point you at the right spot.
Is there electricity on the pitches, and what does it cost?
Yes. 16 amp electric hook-up is available on our touring, motorhome and campervan pitches, and on the electric grass pitches. It’s metered rather than bundled into the price, so you only pay for what you actually use: currently [PLACEHOLDER: rate in pence per unit] a unit, which works out at around [PLACEHOLDER: typical cost per night] a night for a caravan in summer, and more in winter. You buy a pre-paid card at reception, and we refund whatever’s left on it when you leave.
